Atticus managed to get the day off from work. He was so glad. His days were long and quite boring. There was a time when being a lawyer excited him. The thought still excited him. Someday he wanted to open up his own private law firm, but he knew there was a lot of competition especially in New York, and he wasn't quite confident enough in himself to take on such a task. So he stayed at the District Attorney's office, working as an assistant. Some days he'd get lucky and see some courtroom action, but most days he was stuck at a desk. Or even worse, getting coffee for his superiors. Atticus hated feeling like a servant, and right now, he truly did feel like one.
Today he wasn't going to think about his job though. It was his day off! Days off were so rare for him. They had to be cherished when they were given. He had his entire day planned out from start to finish. First, he'd go to his favorite little breakfast café and eat a full English breakfast, then he'd go home and catch up on some reading. Then, he'd make himself lunch before taking Minerva out on a long walk. She deserved it, being cooped up inside all day. Atticus felt bad that he couldn't spend as much time with his dog as he wanted to. When he was at work, he had a hired dog walker take her out.
When the alarm sounded off at eight, he got breakfast and did everything he had planned. After finishing his sandwich, he looked at Minerva. She was such a beautiful little puppy. He was glad to have a dog. "Do you want to go out girlie?" he asked, gently scratching her under her chin. The pup let out a happy bark. At that, Atticus changed into sneakers, got her leash, and left his townhouse. The English Setter bounced happily down the street. She was a very obedient and well behaved dog, especially for being only 9 months. Yes, Atticus was quite proud of his baby.
Soon the pair was at Central Park. The fall day was absolutely glorious. Atticus truly couldn't ask for better weather for his day off. The fall air was not too cold, and the sky was clear. He sat down at a bench, wanting to enjoy the weather. As soon as he sat down, his puppy started barking and ran off. "Minerva!" he shouted, chasing after her like a madman. He swore people were snickering as he ran around the park. Finally, he caught up with her. She was jumping around next to another dog. It looked like a husky. A girl, probably its owner, was running towards the dogs and him. "Miss, I'm so sorry! Usually Minerva doesn't run off like that." | words: too lazy tag: loki/arielle notes: yay! |

Today was one of Arielle's good days. She was able to sleep in later than usual before going to rehearsal. Her classes got cancelled today and she thanked God for that miracle. Before getting ready for rehearsal, Arielle had fed her Husky pup named Sloth and then took him for a brief walk. Her roommate had been gone when she woke up so it was nice to get some alone time with her pets. Once they returned, she promised Sloth they'd go to the park later that afternoon after she got back from rehearsal. Yes, she talked to her pets and sometimes even felt like a mama. Her pet sloth, Husky, squeaked when he saw the food in his cage. Arielle smiled and gave Husky a quick pet before leaving the apartment.
Once she returned she quickly changed into a pair of light wash jeans and a light blue sweater with white lace around the collar. It was such a lovely day outside and she couldn't wait to take Sloth out to the park. Husky was sleeping, otherwise he'd have gone with them. It felt like nothing could stand in her way today: the weather was beautiful, she actually felt rested, and rehearsal had been amazing! If she wasn't one to keep to social etiquette she'd be singing in the park and twirling right now.
But as she was looking for a place to sit and relax, Sloth yipped and somehow managed to get out of his collar. "SLOTH!" Arielle exclaimed, watching him bolt ahead of her. Oh no! The little rascal! She could feel her cheeks redden as she ran across the park in front of spectators, but she told herself to just laugh it off. Her heart pounded in her chest at the thought of losing Sloth. She'd been so hesitant to get a pet because of the fact that she'd get close to it. Images of lost signs being put up or Sloth running into the street and getting hit by a car flashed before Arielle's eyes and she told herself to stay calm. Her feet picked up the pace but she managed to relax when she saw Sloth distracted by another dog. That should buy her enough time to put his collar back on before he bolted again, thinking they were playing.
"Sloth! Bad dog! We don't run away like that. I'm sorry-" But the other owner was interrupting. Great, now she'd have to apologize to whoever owned the other dog and possibly get chewed out for having Sloth off his leash and blah, blah… Oh… Arielle looked up at the voice and felt all fear of conflict dissipate for a brief moment. "Oh, no, it's totally fine! It was my fault. Actually it was Sloth's fault- he managed to get out of his collar. Oh! Speaking of which…" She quickly swooped down and put the collar back on Sloth, but the dog was oblivious as he continued playing around the other dog. "That's a beautiful dog. An English Setter? And, this may seem random, but I couldn't help noticing your accent. Are you British?" Normally Arielle took some pride in being able to identify accents, but she didn't want to be wrong this time and look stupid to the man. Something about him caused her to feel like she could open up to him briefly and actually talk to him without being pushed away.

Atticus loved his dog very much. Right now he was a bachelor. That wasn't really by choice, it was mostly because he had no time for girlfriends nor had he found anyone who he wanted to date. Unlike many of his friends and colleagues, Atticus wanted the girl he ended up with to be long term. He was a closet hopeless romantic, and if his fellow lawyers found out about that, he'd be teased mercilessly. Considering, he was still a little underling in the world of law, he didn't want to discredit himself by coming off as a pansy. So instead of a lady, he had a dog to keep him company. Atticus quite liked it. Minerva was a wonderful companion. She was obedient, even tempered, and easy to talk to. Plus, she didn't talk back to him or say mean things. Yes, he was quite happy having Min be his lady for now.
He was shocked when his dog actually escaped. Usually she never did that. He was terrified he'd lose her. His heart continued beating rapidly and didn't stop until she was safe in his arms. Once he breathed a sigh of relief, he stood up and looked at the dog her pup had been interested in. He was quite the looker, he would admit. Huskies had the prettiest eyes. In his mind, he approved. "Sloth," he said when the husky's owner spoke its name. "That's an interesting name," he said. He moved his hand towards the dog as if to pet it, but stopped midway. "May I?" he asked. After all, it was always polite to ask before petting.
Atticus stood there, observing the female now gracing his company. He'd be a liar if he denied her beauty. He wasn't ogling, simply admiring. "Thank you. She is an English Setter. She's nine months old," he said, gently patting Minerva on the head. "I see you have a husky. They're such lovely dogs," he said with a grin. Atticus was definitely a dog person.
When the girl mentioned his accent, he smiled again and nodded. "Born and raised in Manchester," he said. "Moved here to attend university," he explained. "My name is Atticus by the way. Atticus Granger," he held out his hand to her. | words: too lazy tag: loki/arielle notes: yay! |

Arielle smiled shyly at the man's comment about Sloth's name. "Yeah… He's energetic but very hard to wake up, so I decided 'sloth' would be a fitting name," she said sheepishly. She wouldn't give the other half of her reason: that she had a sloth named Husky. No, that wasn't something she announced to people. Her eyebrows raised slightly at the rare act of politeness the man showed, but she nodded her head soon after. "Yeah, go ahead. Um, thanks for asking. A lot of people don't do that anymore." She chuckled softly when Sloth sniffed the man's -quite beautiful, actually- hand and then nudged it before giving it a few friendly licks. "He likes you," her tone held some pleasant surprise, "he's usually shy around strangers."
When the man gave the name of the English Setter in his arms, Arielle smiled again. "What a beautiful name- fitting for such a dog. Now it's my turn to ask: may I?" She waited until she got permission to pet Minerva. No wonder Sloth had run to her- she was a marvelous breed. Her white coat reminded Arielle of fresh snow and the light brown speckles on her face made it look like she had adorable freckles. "Yes, they are. So are English Setters." She said with a small smile. "Sloth is eleven months." She figured she'd give Sloth's age since she'd gotten Minerva's. There was a slight temptation to make some kind of joke about the two dogs flirting, but she refrained because she wasn't quite sure how to phrase it.
Her eyebrows widened slightly again in interest and she shook his hand. "Nice to meet you, Atticus. I'm Arielle Lore. Mind if I ask what university? And possibly- what made you move to America?" Patriotism ran in Arielle's veins; cut her open and she'd bleed red, white, and blue; so it was no wonder she was always curious as to what made foreigners come to America. It gave her a sense of pride for her country. Suddenly Sloth gave a friendly bark to Minerva and stood on his hind legs, pawing with his front ones. "Sloth, no. That's rude. Ask nicely." When she realized she'd actually talked to her dog like a child in front of a handsome stranger, she could feel the blush staining her cheeks. Normally she never did that in front of others; did she feel too comfortable around Atticus? "Uh, sometimes I talk to Sloth like he's a human… I'm too much of a dog person, I guess…" She chuckled nervously. Sloth whined and nudged closer, sticking his face in the air to try and get a better view of Minerva.
